Dope of the Day at Hillsboro Inlet

April 11, 2026

Inlet chaos

There are a few sure things around Hillsboro Inlet.

The tide will do what it wants, the sand will move whenever it feels like being difficult, and sooner or later some overconfident genius in a sailboat will decide local knowledge is for other people.

Today’s dope of the day appears to have looked at a shifting inlet, ignored whatever the fishing boats were saying, and charged ahead like the channel markers were just decorative suggestions.

That worked out exactly as well as you’d expect.

From the first approach, it looked like this was heading toward a fine display of confidence unsupported by talent. The inlet is full of sand right now, the boats that actually belong there know it, and apparently that memo never reached our featured mariner.

Approach into the inlet

Then came the inevitable stop. Not the graceful kind either. Just a good old-fashioned meeting between fiberglass ambition and Florida geography.

Because bad decisions are rarely satisfied with only one attempt, take two managed to go no better. By then the whole thing had graduated from navigational error to public entertainment.

Response boats arrive

And that’s when the story improved. We got a second dope in the mix.

Now you don’t always get a double feature, and when you do, you ought to appreciate it. One boat making a fool of itself is funny. Two boats doing it in the same patch of water is practically community theater.

Mid-incident action at the inlet

By the end of it, one of them looked properly hung up, Sea Tow was part of the scene, and the inlet had once again reminded everyone that sandbars do not care about your self-esteem.

Gotta love sailboats. Not all of them. Just the ones generous enough to provide material.
